Born in Kidderminster in 1969 Rod Willis became a professional artist after graduating from university. His passion for the landscape was inspired by a childhood spent in the valleys and hills of Worcestershire and Shropshire.
Rod Willis works in both oil and watercolour and is inspired by the great Romantic landscape painters and also the Newlyn School and Lamorna artists. The basis for Rod’s paintings has always been his intuitive feel for light, atmosphere and mood coupled with a natural eye for composition.
Rod Willis discovered the Lake District for the first time in 2005 and has never looked back. He loves to be up on the peaks at daybreak capturing the first golden hour of sunlight, often climbing mountains in near darkness and is inspired and humbled by the sight of those early rays passing over mist laden valleys and fells.
Rod Willis uses the quality of oil paint to bring a depth and colour to his paintings, and his mastery of the medium allows him to capture ephemeral effects such as flickering sunlit reflections on water or the fierce colours of a sunset, making them seem to almost burn out of the canvas.
Not surprisingly, Rod Willis has experienced considerable success in his chosen career and his striking paintings are highly sought after with many often sold before they are even completed.
If approaching the gallery from Penrith or the M6 heading East on the A66 there is a major diversion in place to the gallery via Motherby. Instead of this we would recommend taking the first turning right to Newbiggin shortly after the Rheged roundabout, follow the road through the village and then turn left as you come out of the village. Follow the road up the hill past the recycling centre and turn right at the bend where you will see our brown tourist board sign, follow the lane and signs to the gallery. Altenatively take B5288 from Penrith to Greystoke turning left left to the gallery less than a quarter of a mile out of Greystoke.
Otherwise please follow the diversion signs on the A66 - they will successfully get you here but it will take 10 minutes longer.
OPEN EVERY DAY
10am - 5pm
