Tobias Harrison

Born in 1950 in Cumbria, Tobias Harrison is the son of two celebrated Lake District artists - flower painter Audrey Johnson and figuratist Claude Harrison. Tobias studied pottery at school and then college forging a successful career as a potter for 30 years. In 2001, aged 50, he felt ready for a change and embraced the challenge of painting having not painted or drawn for 30 years, and never in oils. Tobias Harrison describes his approach to painting as ‘straightforward’. He likes to paint still life realistically, capturing colour and texture. Tobias strives to not merely copy the subject but to explain it through paint whilst keeping everything as simple as possible. In addition to still life, Tobias Harrison also paints figurative subjects often with an interesting surreal twist. Tobias Harrison lives with his wife in Southern France spending part of the year on a barge discovering the rivers and canals of Europe. He still has family in England and is a regular visitor here.

Roadworks

If approaching the gallery from Penrith or the M6 heading East on the A66 there is a major diversion in place to the gallery via Motherby. Instead of this we would recommend taking the first turning right to Newbiggin shortly after the Rheged roundabout, follow the road through the village and then turn left as you come out of the village. Follow the road up the hill past the recycling centre and turn right at the bend where you will see our brown tourist board sign, follow the lane and signs to the gallery. Altenatively take B5288 from Penrith to Greystoke turning left left to the gallery less than a quarter of a mile out of Greystoke.

Otherwise please follow the diversion signs on the A66 - they will successfully get you here but it will take 10 minutes longer.
